Signs of Life (for Robert Winley)
when he stands there
staring into space
I like to believe that my friend’s mind is
downloading carefully chosen
references
a scene from a movie
a first kiss
riding his motorcycle
scotch & hemp
holiday parades & orgasms
a walk along the ocean as the sun sets is a favorite
a good book
lots of them
donut shops
the blues
laughter
The Big C has moved in
setting up shop in the suburbs of his brain
evicting all present tenants with
little or no
notice
there goes the neighborhood
all over but the crying
he becomes his tongue & his hair
his senses fire like the pistons of a finely tuned racecar
his hands have
purpose
at moments
the lights flicker on –
somebody’s home
but more often
he gets up
& simply stands there
not really looking at anything
slightly bent over
staring
studying the space
in front of him
he is Christ back from the dead
a young lion full of the gospel of life
the tigers are easy young women
practiced in the act & art of love
he is immersed
baptized in the perfect wisdom of their
desire
while his mind divests
itself of seconds & seasons
the cancer marches slow & steady
seductively consuming everything
advancing towards certain victory
Mother’s breast against his cheek
he stands
his eyes fixed a thousand miles ahead
a tingling bride on the threshold of an
unanswered question
the apple of death enters like a night blooming cactus
there is nothing more beautiful
it is beyond all theory
he bites
the firm sweet flesh of the fruit expands inside of him
a flash of gunfire
as something like the sun
ignites the room
unborn again
