PHOTOGRAPHS FROM AFGHANISTAN
one shows
two dead boys on a bloody sheet. dead boy
in the foreground has a large chunk of his head missing
and dead eyes looking blindly upward. this photograph
I look at for a long time.
everything bothering me this morning
seems very small and unimportant. there is sun
beyond the window. coffee in the kitchen. eggs
if I want them in the refrigerator.
another photograph
on a corporate website
shows a father kneeling over the lifeless bodies
of his children. it looks like somebody in the art department
has air-brushed out the gore. these children
seem peacefully sleeping.
we need a clean and anti-
septic war. all the imperfection editorially removed. on the radio
last week some guy said you know we don't need all this
defeatism
from liberals. what we need to do
is duke nukem and never look back. turn em to glass.
reduce em to a parking lot. the damn liberals
need to get out of the way
and let us do what needs to be done.
nice thing
about thermo-nuke warfare
is it cleans the slate. there's not much left
to photograph. nothing for humanists to focus upon
and wring hands. you can start from the beginning
and make sure you get it right.
duke nuke-ism
is the perfect editorial solution
to pesky problems. tactical nuclear weapons
can be used like huge air-
brush
strokes.
this morning
all problems seem small and almost atomic. there
are eggs in the refrigerator. coffee thanks to
mister coffee. life needs to be appreciated
and troublesome photographs
corrected.
